My dad is an alcoholic, I fucking hate it.
I like him better when he’s sober.
The problem is he can only tolerate being around when he's drunk. There's a middle ground here somewhere, you should probably let him beat you when he's sober.

I've found drunks are more tolerable when you're drunk also.
I have a love, drink relationship with my father. I find it healthy for the whole family.
I have a hate, drink relationship with your mother. Its not healthy.
